MODULE 4: FICTION FUNDAMENTALS

Starting the story, overcoming writer’s block, writing style, opening impact, the body, the ending, first draft, establishing the scene, key and minor characters, setting the mood, establishing relationships.


MODULE 5: DIALOGUE: HE SAID, SHE SAID

Defining characters and advancing the plot through speech and personality, use of apostrophes, intensifying drama, mood and character, dialogue punctuation, tips on good dialogue.


MODULE 6: CREATING MEMORABLE CHARACTERS

Creating unforgettable characters, avoiding stereotypes, heroes and villains, names, appearance, personality and mannerisms, introducing characters, the Black Spot


MODULE 7: ELEMENTS OF CHARACTERISATION

Emotions and traits, character motivation, the importance of consistency, using emotion for effect, characterising heroes and heroines, villains, non-fiction characterisation, practical advice on interviewing, biographies.


MODULE 8: CRAFTING THE SHORT STORY

Analysing fiction markets, magazine opportunities, research, taboos, types of publications, mini books, the romance, the western, science fiction, Whodunits – the detective story.


MODULE 9: FACTS AND FIGURES: WRITING NON-FICTION

Ideas for stories, types of publications, D-I-Y books, biographies and autobiographies, travelogues, instruction manuals, holiday guides, children’s textbooks, histories, components of a non-fiction book.


MODULE 10: WRITE HERE. WRITE NOW

Developing style and imagination, background and scene setting, reference sources, literary devices, writing faults, manuscript presentation, agents, editing, self-publishing, promotion, assignment.
